New Delhi, September 21: Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, Ameer (National President) of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on Saturday called upon Indian people and government to protect democracy in Egypt. Human rights are being violated at large scale there but no voice is being raised by human rights activists, said Jamaat chief in his presidential address at a public meeting here at Indian Social Institute today.
It is the oppressed who need help and solidarity, not the oppressors. The achievements of the toppled government of president Mohamed Morsi during one year regime were unbelievable. He had taken several steps to consolidate the economy of the country. But the military of the country in connivance with some foreign forces sacked the president and removed his government, said Maulana Umari adding that the military government is now buying some puppets to run the country.
The Public Meeting for restoration of democracy, freedom, justice and human rights in Egypt was organised by Forum for Solidarity with Egyptian People in collaboration with Jamaat, SIO, Muslim Majlise Mushawarat, Jamiat Ulema-i- Hind, All India Milli Council, Majlis Ulema Hind and Egypt Solidarity Forum.
Addressing the distinguished gathering, Mr. Ravi Nair of South Asian Documentation Centre said it was a coup, Morsi is not former president, he is the president even today and what is happening in Egypt is not an internal affair; it is a matter of global interest. He also impressed upon the Indian government to intervene to protect democracy in Egypt. He said Indian govt. had earlier interfered in internal matters of some countries and excluded Fiji from Common Wealth. While concluding his speech the speaker urged each individual present there to resolve before leaving this hall that he would raise his voice from Delhi for restoration of democracy in Egypt.
Prof. AK Ramakrishnan of Centre for West Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, started his speech recalling his stay in Egypt during "Dictatorial regime" of Mubarak and saying that he knew the meaning and value of democracy. He said that when last year he visited Egypt he found a tremendous change in the country especially in the fields of economy as compared to Mubarak's regime. He wondered how the so-called pro-democracy people can support the military govt. to save democracy. The military coup is a military coup and no military can save democracy in any country. And in Egypt also the military butchered the civilians. The Freedom and Justice Party is having an excellent and unparalleled civic plan giving each citizen his rights.
Convenor of the programme Mohammad Ahmad who is also a national secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind asked how the military can topple a democratically elected government and holocaust thousands of pro-democracy activists. He put a big question mark on the silence of pro-democracy people and country.
Briefing the situation prevailing in Egypt, Dr. SQR Iliyas, member All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said the silence of Indian politicians, newspapers and news analysts and others is part of the conspiracy. They say the military has mirrored the demand of public over failure of Morsi government and that president Morsi was struggling to impose the policies of MB on pan country which was not mandated by the public. The Indian govt. and others say that it is the internal matter of a country and it cannot intervene in it. But the history suggests that the country has extended its full support to the people fighting for democracy in South Africa. Not to go long back, the Indian govt. has extended its full support to the democratic movement of Bangladesh and had sent its Army as well for the purpose. Then the country's statement that it will not interfere in the "internal matters" of Egypt is unjustifiable.
Maulana Abdul Hameed Nomani, secretary Jamiat Ulema-i- Hind criticized media for not highlighting the brutalities in Egypt. The media is puppet in the hands of some biased and partial parties that is why they supported the coup in Egypt. This is the nadir of heartlessness that a remarkable number of people stand with the unjustified military government and provide monetary support, he said.
Addressing the gathering, Ashfaq Shariff, National President, Students Islamic Organisation of India, said that human rights and democracy have been the two integral issues of every symposium and public gathering in this 21st century but the more we discuss the issue the greater becomes the violation of these rights. What is happening in Egypt is not only undemocratic but also the violation of human rights of a common man on a larger scale. We see the youngsters in Egypt are on forefront of the anti-coup govt. this is a lesson for Indian youths as well and they should come forward to uproot all evils.
Parwaz Rahmani, the Editor in Chief of the Urdu biweekly Dawat, said if the USA, Saudi Arabia, Israel and others prop up the military govt. it might be justified somehow as they felt Egypt a threat to their larger interest. But why the politicians and news analysts say this is beyond explanation. I think they say so because they know about Islam through the West.
Dr. Zafarul Islam Khan, president All India Muslim Majlise Mushawart said that no Islamic party ever tried to grab power using force. They always come to power through democratic ways—in Palestine, Turkey and most recently in Egypt. Then why the world especially the West creates hurdles in their ways, he asked. Giving the example of Turkey, Dr. Khan said that the Islamist governments have always contributed to the world economy. Turkey was in debt before the Islamist came to power but now it lends to the IMF and is among nine richest countries of the world.
